Why SEO still matters – and what you should be doing about it

May 23, 2025 | Don Farber

If you’ve heard that SEO is dead, think again. Search Engine Optimization isn’t just alive – it’s evolving. As voice assistants, AI-powered results and changing search habits shift the landscape, the fundamentals of SEO have become even more critical.

At MindFire, we believe great SEO doesn’t mute your brand – it amplifies it. It’s not about gaming the system or chasing quick wins. It’s about helping people discover your content and connect with your brand in a way that feels human, relevant and true to who you are. The right strategies can boost your visibility while still letting your voice shine through with every headline, every meta tag and every sentence.

We treat SEO as a long game, focused on building a strong foundation that speaks the language of your audience and your brand.

The why behind SEO

There’s more content online than ever, and SEO is what helps your brand rise above the noise. In addition, a strategic approach to SEO is just plain smart. Here are a few reasons why:

  • With competition high and search engines getting smarter, a strong SEO strategy helps your content stay visible.
  • It’s not just about keywords anymore – Google prioritizes helpful, relevant content and good SEO means fast load times, mobile-friendly design and intuitive navigation.
  • A thoughtful approach for integrating SEO keywords into your website content will help you get found easier. That includes taking into consideration the evolving nature of search habits, with things like voice search and AI.
  • The online audience trusts higher-ranking sites. SEO can build credibility before anyone even clicks on your link.

And while AI tools are shifting how we search, those tools still rely on the same fundamentals: a strong technical foundation, high-quality content, effective use of keywords and authoritative backlinks.

So, what does that look like in practice?

We typically begin with an SEO and website health audit.

An SEO audit is a process that evaluates all aspects of a website that impacts its performance on search engines and identifies opportunities for improvement. This process involves analyzing on-page elements, content, website speed, backlink profile and technical issues, among other things.

From there we take those insights to focus on the four key pillars of SEO.

Pillar 1: On-page optimization

On-page optimization is all about the content on your page – because words matter! We optimize for keyword placement, content length and readability so your copy connects with both users and search engines.

This process begins with keyword audits and a competitive “gap analysis.” This includes checking which keywords your site already ranks for, identifying new keyword opportunities and comparing your site to competitors. We look at things like what keywords you share with your competitors and which keywords are missing – i.e.. those words that drive traffic to your competitor’s site but not yours.

From there, we use our insights to optimize the following things:

  • Page titles and meta descriptions. These show up in search results and help users decide whether to click. Meta descriptions don’t directly impact ranking, but they do influence traffic.
  • Headers and content structure. Search engines scan these to understand the content on your page.
  • Canonical tags, Open Graph data, and alt text. These technical pieces help with indexing and social sharing.
  • Internal and external links. We make sure links are relevant, useful, and easy for search engines to crawl.
  • URL structure and anchor text. Clear, keyword-rich URLs and descriptive link text are better for users and for search.

Pillar 2: Technical SEO

Technical SEO is where we dig into the bones of your site. After all, even the best content can’t shine if your website isn’t working properly behind the scenes.

Here’s what we look at:

  • Site health. We run audits to find broken links, duplicate content, unoptimized images and anything slowing you down.
  • Performance and user experience. Load time, mobile responsiveness and accessibility all factor into your ranking – and how long users stay on your site.
  • Accessibility. An accessible site is better for users with disabilities, and search engines favor inclusive design.

Our goal is to make sure search engines can find and index your content so that people can access it without frustration.

Pillar 3: Business listings and citations

Business listings and citations are especially important for local SEO. When people search for businesses nearby, accurate listings help you show up. To help optimize your site we:

  • Scan existing business listings for inconsistencies
  • Correct errors in your name, address, and phone number
  • Identify new, high-authority directories where your business should be listed

Consistency builds credibility with search engines, which can improve your rankings in local search results.

Pillar 4: Link building

In the SEO world, you can think of backlinks like a vote of confidence. When a credible site links to yours, it tells Google your content is trustworthy.

To make sure your site has backlinks, we focus on two key factors:

  • Referring domains. Getting backlinks from high-authority websites boosts your ranking and drives more traffic.
  • Internal linking. Linking between your own pages helps users navigate your site and tells search engines which content is most important.

This part of the process is not about stuffing your site with random links. We pay close attention to anchor text (the clickable part of a link) to make sure it’s relevant, helpful and keyword friendly.

When it comes to your website and SEO remember: it still works.

It’s not about chasing trends or checking boxes. The smartest strategies focus on what’s always worked: creating a strong site, publishing quality content and making sure it’s easy for users – and search engines – to find.

SEO isn’t the flashiest of marketing strategies. But it works hard in the background to help your business grow. And in today’s noisy digital world, that matters more than ever.
